Public concerned as authorities battle to flush out contaminants from Kelani River
Although statements were made that the oil layer that contaminated the water in the Kelani River was removed, the general public are skeptical over these claims.
Resident living in Kolonnawa, Kotte, Maligakanda, Dehiwala , Mutuwal and Mattakuliya areas that receive water from the Ambatale Water Treatment Plant were severely inconvenienced after the water from the Kelani River was contaminated by oil.
Residents claim that waste materiel are disposed to the Kelani river by the industries located on its banks and by those who use the river as well.
However, the Water Supply and Drainage Board says that it was able to distribute clean drinking water on Friday.
The News 1st team that visited the Ambatale Water Treatment plant was able to witness a two-hour purification process that the water from the Kelani River undergoes through several phases.
This Water Treatment Plant constructed in 1996 comprises of six purification tanks and bears the ISO certificate. However, human activity had led to a situation where more oil released to the Kelani River is being led to the Water Treatment Plant is also another risk.
The News 1st team also inquired in to the present condition of water in the Kelani River.
