We never created a ‘shadow LTTE’
State media had recently revealed that information regarding a shadow LTTE was revealed when investigations were conducted by the CID regarding the disappearance of cartoonist Prageeth Eknaligoda and the CID would be revealing this information to the country.
However, former Army Commander Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka says according to his knowledge the Army had never created a ‘shadow LTTE’.
Speaking further the Field Marshal said, “I was the Commander of the Army while the war was on and during the most dangerous stage of the war. Even during this period we didn’t create a ‘shadow LTTE’. There had never been such a thing in the Army. Even after the war I don’t think former Army Commander or the Army intelligence had any necessity to create such a unit. All we could say is there wasn’t such a unit in the Army. If intelligence units say Eknaligoda was in such a shadow LTTE camp they should be responsible for the life of Eknaligoda. They could not allow Eknaligoda to be disappeared or murdered instead of taking any legal action against him. There would have been a murder here. Intelligence sections or the Army have no permission to carry out such a murder. The discipline we followed did not allow for such an action. Those units should be held responsible for the life of Eknaligoda.”
