The practical training session of the awareness programme jointly organised by News 1st and the Department of Wildlife on preventing the human -elephant conflict from escalating, took place in the Kankanigama area in Galgamuwa on Saturday.
The first phase of the programme to provide theoretical lessons with the participation of the villagers from areas battered by the human elephant conflict, took place in Galgamuwa on Friday.
Three representatives were selected from each village and awareness was raised on taking precautions during an elephant attack on a village, after informing the Department of Wildlife.
At Friday’s event, it was revealed that there was no proper mechanism in place to provide elephant flares to the local villages.
Thereby, the village representatives were presented with elephant flares at the Galgamuwa Wildlife Office.
