The President has called upon the people to tell the truth about the motherland to the world to secure the peace that has been won.
He said to safeguard freedom the truth about the motherland had to be revealed sans succumbing to narrow views. Those who are not committed to the truth cannot win peace or freedom. His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith had shown to the world that political and religious leaders as well as others should contribute towards peace and freedom. The President made these observations at a function organized to felicitate His Eminence. Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith.
The President said that anyone who does not love his motherland will not win the world. Everyone should be committed towards protecting the country that had been liberated from terrorism. The President said the elevation of His Eminence Malcolm Ranjith to the position of Crdinal is a victory to the Sri Lankans. A book authored by Rev. Benedict Joseph on the new Cardinal was presented to the distinguished guests including the President.
His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith said he regards his position not as an honour but an invitation to serve the Catholic Church and the country on a wider scale. He said the country has been closely associated with Buddhism from the ancient past while the Hindu, Islamic and Christian communities were also respected. Therefore he added that it is important to manifest the religious teachings in the attempts made to achieve economic development.
First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, Ministers, Parliamentarians nd Commanders of the Security Forces were among those who graced the occasion. Papal Nuncio to Sri Lanka Archbishop Rt. Rev. Joseph Spiteri was also among those present.
