Human-elephant conflict rages on; Polonnaruwa, Mahiyangana villagers at risk
Villages in Mahiyanganaya have been battered by the human elephant conflict for many years.The locals of these villages live in fear during day and night, unsure when a wild pachyderm who storm in their premieses.
A wild elephant was reported to have made its way to the Galayaya area in Haddaluwa , Mahiyanganaya on Saturday morning.
This elephant was one that was left behind from the herd that destroyed a number of houses in the village on Saturday evening. Residents state that setting up an electric fence or chasing away the wild elephants that enter the village will not solve the issue.
A 33-year-old father in the 28th area in Kadawalayaya in Polonnaruwa was killed in an elephant attack. He succumbed to his injuries after being admitted to hospital. Wild elephants have also brought destruction to the Polonnaruwa Aluth Wewa Maha Vidyalaya.
The presence of the wild elephants have put the lives of these children at risk. (Please watch video).These wild elephants have also detroyed the model farms built by the students. Other lands used by students for their education have also been invaded by wild elephants.
