SL Tea Factory Owners Association holds 24th AGM
The 24th Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Tea Factory Owners Association was held on Saturday. Several dignitaries including a number of stakeholders of the plantation association were present at the occassion.
Minister of Plantation Industries, Navin Dissanayake stated:
The tea industry is facing a crisis and it is facing a crisis because of the drop in international prices. Last year, at this particular moment of time, a kilo of tea was reaching Rs.520 in the auction.
He added:
Today it has slightly increased, from I think about three weeks ago…….
He went on to state:
We will be deeply conscious of the fact that subsidies in any format is controversial and surely myself as the minister would have to be very conscious of the short term plans that we have. Because this is a question of survival and therefore as the minister in charge, I will assure you that whatever decisions the government and I make, will be a consensual approach, and it will never be a arbitrary approach.
He further stated:
I will be discussing with all the stakeholders and coming to some kind of minimum consensual consensus on what should be done.
