Amnesty for prisoners in view of Independence

Over 1500 prisoners were given a Presidential pardon today to mark Sri Lanka’s 63rd Independence.

175 prisoners who were jailed for minor offences unable pay fines were released from the Welikada Prisons today. Among them were 17 female inmates and 158 male inmates. They left home with their relatives after the conduct of multi-religious observances.

109 were freed from the Bogambara Prisons. They included 1102 males and seven females. The release of the inmates took place under the auspices of the Bogambara Prisons Superintendent Tissa Jayasinghe.

A general amnesty was given today for 208 inmates of the Anuradhapura Prisons. They were released under the guidance of the Anuradhapura Prisons Superintendent W.G.L. Chandrasiri Among those who gained freedom on Independence Day were five females. The inmates as well as Prison Officials experienced hardships as the precincts of the Anuradhapura Prisons was under water.

22 prisoners were granted freedom from the Tangalla Prisons today.

Meanwhile, 13 inmates received the amnesty from the Jaffna Prisons. They were released under the patronage of Prisons Superintendent Gamini Bandara.
