Mahinda’s gift of elephants to Gota probed
The state counsel representing the Attorney General stated to Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya in Court yesterday (1st) that an investigation was being conducted regarding the two elephant calves given through a charter to former Defense Secretary Gotbhaya Rajapaksa by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
This was stated when the case against possessing elephants illegally was heard before the Chief Magistrate. The media had reported that Mahinda Rajapaksa had given an elephant calf from the zoo to Gotabhaya Rajapaksa through a charter.
The counsel representing AG said in Court that elephant calves given to Gotabhaya Rajapaksa were not with him at present. He has also mentioned names of few others who are keeping elephant calves illegally. Names of 11 such people including that of Additional Magistrate Thilina Gamage, Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera, former Leader of the Opposition of Western Provincial Council Kithsiri Kahatapitiya have been mentioned regarding possession of elephants illegally.
