President returns after a successful tour of Bangladesh further solidifying relations

President Rajapaksa has just concluded another successful state visit. His visit to Bangladesh has yielded many benefits.

The President embarked on an official visit to Bangladesh last Monday at the invitation of his Bangladeshi counterpart Zillur Rahman. He was given a warm welcome accorded to a Head of State. President Rajapaksa commenced his visit by paying floral tributes to the Monument put up in memory of heroes who waged the battle for the country’s freedom. Thereafter he had successful bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. It was followed by the inking of several agreements which is of significance to the two countries. A notable feature was the agreement on a cultural, education and scientific exchange progrmme.

The Prime Minister of Bangladesh hosted banquet in honour of the President and his retinue. The President also had talks with the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Dipu Moni with the aim of further fortifying state ties between the two countries. On the second day of the tour, the President visited the Sheikh Mujibhur Rahman Memorial Museum and the International Buddhist Centre located at Merul Badda. The President met a group of leading businessmen in Dhaka and had lengthy discussions.

Another significant feature of the President’s visit was the presentation of a part of the hair relics of the Lord Buddha to the President at the Chittagong Buddhist Centre. It was presented by the Buddhist Federation of Bangladesh.

President of Bangladesh Zillur Rahman hosted a banquet in honour of the President and his entourage. President Rajapaksa pointed out that his visit enabled to further consolidate ties between the two countries.

The President did not forget to meet the Sri Lanka Community in Bangladesh. The meeting took place at the Sri Lankan High Commission in Dhaka.

The President ended his three day official visit to Bangladesh today on a successful note.
