Presidential commission investigates suspicions of Sathosa rice stock fraud
The Presidential Commission of Inquiry into Serious Acts of Fraud and Corruption has commenced an investigation over suspected large-scale rice fraud at Sathosa.
Following an inquiry, the commission sealed a rice storage facility of Sathosa in Veyangoda today, Jan. 1, 2016.
Secretary to the Presidential Commission into Serious Acts of Fraud and Corruption, Lacille de Silva, said they have commenced an investigation into large-scale fraud being carried out on the excess rice stocks imported to the country by Sathosa and currently at the Colombo Harbor and other storage facilities.
Officers from the Commission today inspected 201 containers in Sedawatte , Colombo and the storage in Veyangoda owned by the Department of Food, all suspected of being housing the stock of rice in question.
Rural Economic Development Minister P. Harrison recently speaking to the media made a revelation on the stock of rice in question.
The minister said that during the recent presidential election, Sathosa had imported over 200,000 metric tonnes of rice in to the country and over 75,000 metric tonnes of rice are still at the Sathosa stores.
