Northern fishermen meet JVP
A special meeting between fishermen in the North and the JVP leaders was held at the JVP head office today (5th) morning.
A large number of representatives of fishermen’s union in the North participated. The Information Secretary of the JVP MP Vijitha Herath and the President of All Ceylon Fishermen’s Federation MP Nihal Galappathty represented the JVP.
The fisher men explained that Indian fishermen violating borders and fishing in Sri Lankan waters is a very serious issue, it needs a strong mediation by the government but the former government or the present government haven’t done any mediation they pointed out.
They also pointed out the sea area in the North is suitable for breeding fish and it could be a boost of the economy if a programme is carried out to do so.
Mr. Vijitha Herath explained to the fishermen that the JVP has drawn its attention to issues of not only the fishermen in the North but also that of all fishermen in the country. He said fisher folk are being organized and All Ceylon Fishermen’s Federation takes up fisher men’s issues.
The two parties have discussed the issue regarding Indian fisher men and have come to a decision regarding the manner the issue should be resolved.
