A 14-month old baby is was thrown from a moving car just before midnight Thursday, and Richland County Sheriff’s investigators want to know if it is related to an alleged shoplifting at a K-Mart on Two Notch Road.
Deputies say two women were confronted by security guards who thought they were stealing from the store. One of the women ran to a car where a third woman was waiting.
The female driver pulled off, sheriff’s department spokesman Curtis Wilson said. “In doing so, the back door was unsecure, as well as the 14-month-old baby that was inside.
“The baby was thrown from the vehicle and sustained major injuries. We are interviewing the driver of that vehicle to find out if it is related or unrelated to the shoplifting call at this time.”
Sheriff’s deputies say the child suffered serious injuries including broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and abrasions.
