A tense situation arose in parliament on Tuesday. Opposition and government representatives offered their explanations on the situation that arose in parliament

“We must state with responsibility that this is not the fishmongers’ shop at the junction, for them to arbitrarily adopt legislation” said UPFA  MP Dinesh Gunawardena. He  further noted that the Supreme court has said that the bill must be amended while the Speaker and the government behaved in this way without even giving the members a chance to see what the change was.

“We especially call on the honourable Speaker to uphold the respect and supremacy of parliament,” charged the MP who went on to note that parliament functions because of its superiority and not because of the Speaker – and a Speaker cannot make parliament function without the members.

“The attempt, to continue with the functions of parliament excluding the 51 MPs represented by us, is saddening” he said

Deputy Speaker, Thilanga Sumathipala noted that the responsibilities of the parliament , the responsibilities of the MPs, the responsibilities of the groups and the responsibilities of representatives of parties that are elected to parliament must be separately understood.

He further condemned the actions that took place and further added “They are sabotaging parliament”. He condemned the actions that took place.

He further expressed that bringing weapons into parliament, bombing parliament and sabotaging parliament are all “terrorist actions” and one must decide whether they will give leadership to a terrorist cartel  – and they must decide if it is democratic or not.
