WP Councillor Susara Dinal calls for broad programme to eradicate drugs from schools
Speaking at a meeting of the Western Provincial Council, member Susara Dinal emphasised the need for the general public to come together to eradicate drugs. He made this call after discovering that children as young as ten were getting involved in selling drugs while at school.
He stated that President Maithripala Sirisena had committed the country to eradicating drug smuggling.
“The president brought a group including the Director of Customs and spoke about the methods drugs are smuggled into the country and how he plans to eradicate this as a whole,” he said
He went on to say the need was also for schools to become better equipped to tackle drug consumption on their campuses.
Going back to the example of a child who was reprimanded for selling packets of drugs, the WP Councillor stated that the school which the boy went to was no more that 500 metres away from a police station. He said “The police are aware that this school faces this problem”.
He said that it was up to the WPC and his fellow councilors to counter the drug menace and stated to the Chairman of the WPC that “there should be a broad programme to tackle this issue.”
“How can teachers stand guard at the gates and challenge those who throw packets of drugs into the school?” he quipped.
