The Higher Education Ministry has given an assurance that the Trincomalee Campus of the Eastern University will not be relocated in Batticaloa.
Various views had been expressed in the past few days on the decision to shift the Trincomalee Campus of the Eastern University to Batticaloa. University students who met Minister Wimal Weerawansa who was participating in a function at Koneshipuri in Trincomalee appraised him about the development. Views were expressed calling for the establishment of the University in Trincomalee and the benefits the students would achieve by upgrading its facilities. The Minister had pledged that he would visit the University premises with a positive response to the issue of the students. On arrival at the University, the Minister was accorded a warm welcome. The decision arrived at after discussing the matter with Higher Education Secretary Dr. Sunil Jayantha Nawaratne was intimated to the students.
Minister Weerawansa said after discussion they reached an agreement. Accordingly he gave an assurance that the students of Trincomalee will not be taken to Batticaloa.
The Minister said that the effort made by the students in Trincomalee to resolve their problem through discussion was an example to the entire University Network. The Minister pointed out that the students have set an example by discussing their problems through negotiations without staging protests. He said the student leaders had taken a prudent decision to mediate in the issue and resolve the matter.
