Civil organisations comment on tense situation in parliament

- newsfirst.lk

A tense situation arose in parliament on Tuesday and circulated widely on social media platforms. Civil organisations on Wednesday commented on this situation.

Executive Director of PAFFREL, Rohana Hettiarachchi noted that members of parliament are a respected group of persons and they must act in a manner that protects the prestige of the people, and the parliament.

“As citizens and as voters of this country we expect an exemplary conduct from the Members of Parliament ” he charged

Executive Director of CaFFE, Keerthi Tennekoon noted that members of the parliament are elected to formulate laws and regulations that would affect the present and the future of Sri Lanka, and they are not elected to make the parliament a platform for their political means.

“We need members of parliament who would think of the future when making laws,” he said and further added that what is unfortunate is that these members of parliament bring about their political and personal agendas to the fore even at a time when decisive legislations are taken up in parliament.

Chairman of the National Trade Union Front, Saman Ratnapriya noted that when the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was presented to Parliament, persons consumed alcohol within parliament and even took off their garments and did “various things” until the dawn of the next day.

He added that 20 million elect 225 persons, but they have failed to resolve matters through dialogue within parliament. And if they cannot do that, they can come out and resolve those matters with the people and not act in such a manner inside the chamber.
