PM fields questions on trade and aviation in parliament

- newsfirst.lk

Members of Parliament were on Wednesday provided with the opportunity to pose direct questions to the Prime Minister in accordance with Commonwealth parliamentary traditions.

MP Wimal Weerawansa asked “How could there be a development in the IT sector of the country , if the employment opportunities are given to the Indians?”

The Prime Minister said he had previously assured that “no one will lose their jobs” and then fired back at the parliamentarian ” You are saying not to give anything to India and do not enter the Indian markets. Does this mean we should also say ‘no’ to China?”

JVP parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti had questions regarding the leasing of aircraft. Eight A330s are already under lease and the MP quizzed if ” at this time will the lease of more A350 Aircraft be reconsidered?”

Ranil Wickremesinghe blamed the former regime for purchasing the aircraft which were now being flown on non-profitable routes to Europe. The Prime Minister said that his hands were tied “If we do not obtain these eight aircrafts we will have to pay a fine of Rs.12 million  to the airbus company. We are stuck.”

Another JVP MP, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, raised further questions on the financial costs of leasing the new aircraft to which the Prime Minister said that negotiations with airbus were on the cards.

He said they would request the aviation company to exchange the aircraft for smaller ones, more suited to flying within Asia.
