Yoshitha Rajapaksa, son of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa and four others were further remanded till the February 25. They were further remanded after they were produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate on Thursday February 11. Yoshitha Rajapaksa was produced in court along with directors of CSN Nishantha Ranatunga, Rohan Weliwita, Ashan Ravinath Fernando and Kavishan Dissanayake.

A heavy security detail was deployed at the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court premises. Former president, former first lady and their family members were also present in court. Presenting facts to court, police said that a mobile phone was discovered in a location close to the cell in which Yoshitha Rajapaksa and others were being held.

The court granted permission for the mobile phone to be further examined by the Computer Emergency Response Team as the police raised suspicions that it was used by the remanded persons.

The lawyers appearing on behalf of the defendants stated before court that they are anticipating the decision of the magistrate as the bail application was presented when the case was taken up at a prior occasion. Magistrate Dhammika Hemmapala who adjourned judicial proceedings for a few minutes declared the decision after proceedings recommenced.

The former president refrained from expressing views to journalists who gathered at the location. A number of MPs however, expressed their views. UPFA MP Namal Rajapaksa said that the good governance is not providing solutions to the people’s issues and is looking for gossip about the others.

He noted that, back then, children and the wives were never hunted though revenge was taken from those who engaged in politics.
