Min. Dayasiri Jayasekara announces foster scheme for winning SAG athletes
Minister of Sports Dayasiri Jayasekara announced on Thursday, February 11, that a foster-care scheme would be established for sportsmen and women. He made this exclusive announcement to Sports 1st while attending the 12th South Asian Games in India.
Speaking to Sports1st, the minister said that among the sportsmen and women who won medals at the South Asian Games are those who live amidst various hardships, adding that they have no jobs and have not been recognised.
The minister noted that once he returns to the country, he would discuss personally, with each of the athletes and have follow-up discussions with the private sector to provide employment opportunities for them.
He went onto note that he hopes to establish a foster-care system for them so that all the sportsmen and women will be taken care of by one single institution.
