President speaks of overcoming obstacles internationally at Polonnaruwa event

- newsfirst.lk

President Maithripala Sirisena, speaking while initiating several projects under the Pibidemu Polonnaruwa District Development Drive on Saturday, said that while Sri Lanka is overcoming obstacles internationally, there are some who are making baseless allegations.

The national programme to provide clean drinking water in a bid to eradicate chronic kidney disease from Sri Lanka commenced on Saturday. Under the programme 550,000 persons living in the North Central , North Western, Uva and Central Province will be provided with clean drinking water in the coming two years at cost of  Rs.7200 million.

The president stated that some are making various allegations against the government. And when the United Nations Human Rights Chief visited the country he said that this is one of the most beautiful countries in the world and that there are only a handful of such countries.

He further added that the UNHRC chief had said that the country is being governed in a proper manner during the period of one year and that they are pleased about it.

“We are not influenced,” said the President, who went on to note that political opponents continue to make various statements. He stated that the former president had told a newspaper recently that agreeing to the UNHRC resolution is worse than the agreement that was reached in 1815 with the English, and a betrayal.

“I am not sure if he is making these statements after reading the accord of 1815,” charged the President. The president further noted that before being elected to power the former president used to say that they are attempting to take him, and all those who engaged in the war, to the War Tribunal and the Electric Chair.

“I must clearly mention that it was we who can save them from it,” said the president and added that the issues that prevailed were resolved by the new government…

Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils, Faiszer Musthapha noted that there was a black mark on the country internationally, and after going to Geneva with the delegations, every year the resolutions against the country increased.

“We are able to remove that black mark internationally,” said the Minster and added that today the cabinet is independent; but back then there was no ability to make any comment within or outside the cabinet.

The president also placed the foundation stone for the construction of a three-storey building at Welikada Central College and also declared open the Technical Laboratory at the school.
