President Rajapaksa has given instructions to officials to expedite the purchase of paddy.
The President said that purchases should be expedited with the purpose of passing on the benefits to the cultivators, as paddy harvesting is now in progress in many areas. The President laid this emphasis during a meeting of the National Council for Disaster Management. It was held at Temple Trees. Minister Johnston Fernando was told to take immediate action for the purchase of paddy.
This meeting is being held in every quarter of the year. Reports on the progress of disaster management projects were presented to the President. An immediate programme was necessary to minimize the damage caused to the environment due to sand mining carried out in rivers. The President pointed out the need to use sea sand for construction. He noted that it was the responsibility of officials to see that the assistance offered by the Government during disasters was being properly utilized. Several Parliamentarians, Chief Ministers and many Government officials were present on the occasion.
