N.Korea prepares for First North Korean Congress in 36 Years

Kim Jong-un is to cement his his status as the supreme leader through the seventh congress of the governing Workers’ Party on Friday.

The last time it was hosted in 1980, Kim Il Sung, North Korea’s founder and President, elevated his son Kim Jong Il to No. 2 in the party, solidifying his position as successor.

Meeting for the first time in a generation, the congress (in theory, the country’s highest decision-making body) will elect a new central committee, which in turn appoints the party’s Politburo and presidium.

The posts will be likely filled by a new generation of loyalists whom Mr. Kim has already been elevating.

According to reports the meeting will highlight Mr. Kim’s promotion of his so-called byungjin policy, which calls for simultaneously achieving two seemingly incompatible goals: a nuclear arsenal and economic development

Most Pyongyang citizens have been expected to rise early and go to bed late for more than 2 months in order to maximize productivity during the “70-day battle”

The extensive hours are a part of a state-mandated drive to prepare Pyongyang for the political gathering that begins at 9 a.m. on Friday in an art center called “April 25 House of Culture
