Speaker appoints committee to probe parliament vote on supplementary estimate
Thursday’s vote in parliament over the supplementary estimates raised tensions in parliament again on Friday. Chief Opposition Whip Anura Kumara Dissanayake informed the speaker on Friday that the result of the vote cannot be accepted.
The speaker appointed a four-member committee headed by the opposition leader, to look into the matter.
Leader of the house Minister Lakshman Kiriella noted:
When the chair announces a result, the matter is final. After parliament was adjourned these members visited the chamber of the secretary and influenced him. Is this parliamentary tradition? ..”
UPFA MP Dinesh Gunawardena said that they reached a consensus after talking with all the leaders for about two hours that the verdict that was given was wrong.
