Liam Fox’s Sri Lanka Development Fund questioned
British media reports that the Sri Lanka Development Fund, set up by Britain’s Defence Secretary Liam Fox has not achieved any results other than to pay for his trips to the island.
The defence secretary has told the House of Commons that he had worked with people in business, banking and politics in Sri Lanka since 2009 to set up the Trust to help with reconstruction of the country after the war.
"The aim was to use a proportion of profits made to fund development projects in Tamil communities. Neither myself, Mr Werritty nor others sought to receive any share of the profits for assisting the trust," he said.
The defence secretary has been under pressure after it emerged that his friend, the lobbyist Adam Werritty, was present on 18 overseas trips and had met the defence secretary at the ministry 22 times since May 2010.
BBC Sri Lanka correspondent, Charles Haviland says that Sri Lanka Development Trust does not have a high profile in Sri Lanka.
