Voting to elect people’s representatives to local government bodies may be over, but Sri Lankans will soon have another opportunity to exercise their right to vote — this time from the comfort of their homes or offices and for their favourite cricketer.

The selection by SMS voting of the 2011 CEAT Peoples Player of the Year, one of the highlights of the annual CEAT Sri Lanka Cricket Awards, begins on Saturday, October 22, and members of the public will be permitted to vote as many times as they like for their choice, in the five weeks to Friday, November 25.
The 100 cricketers on contract with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) are eligible to receive votes for this prestigious award, which will be presented at the 2011 CEAT Sri Lanka Cricket Awards scheduled for  November 29. The names of these 100 players are published on the website of Sri Lanka Cricket (www.srilankacricket.lk) for the convenience of voters.
Voting may be done via five mobile networks — Dialog, Etisalat, Mobitel, Hutch and Airtel — and the CDMA services of Lanka Bell, Suntel and SLT City Link. Voters should type CEAT (space) Name of the Cricketer and send to 6797 to participate. Each voting SMS will cost the sender Rs 2.50.
As a special reward from CEAT Sri Lanka, all persons who vote for their favourite cricketer will go into a draw at the end of voting and 10 voters will win tickets to the grand 2011 CEAT Sri Lanka Cricket Awards gala at the Waters Edge.
Commenting on CEAT’s support to cricket and the CEAT Peoples Player of the Year competition, CEAT Sri Lanka’s Managing Director and CEO N. C. Venugopal said: “CEAT shares with its Sri Lankan customers at all levels, a love for high-performance cricket. The CEAT Sri Lanka Cricket Awards presentation is therefore a compliment to the people of Sri Lanka, who have made us the number one tyre brand in this country.”
Sri Lanka’s swashbuckling top order batsman and current national captain Tillekeratne Dilshan won the coveted CEAT Peoples Player of the Year in 2009, while former captain Kumar Sangakkara was the people’s choice in 2010.
