Misappropriation of funds case filed against former TRC DG Anusha Palpita taken up
The case filed against the former director general of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission Anusha Palpita for misappropriating funds for the distribution of Sil Cloth was taken up before the Colombo High Court on Wednesday, May 25.
When the case was taken up before Colombo High Court Judge Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne , the first witness provided evidence. It was announced that a large quantity of white cloth was purchased from a shop owned by the witness who is a clothing trader. The case was postponed to June 13.
Civil Organisations were questioned on the appointment of Anusha Palpita to a position of Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs under Vajira Abeywardena , even at a time when indictments have been filed with the High Court against Palpita.
In a letter addressed to Ranjith Maddumabandara, the Minister of Public Administration and Management, the Campaign for Free and Fair Elections notes that Anusha Palpita is the one and only officer in the public service who currently faces indictments.
In the letter CaFFE notes that that the Criminal Investigations Department had officially informed the TRC of the filing of indictments and the Officer in charge of the institution has also directed a copy of that to the President’s Secretary.
CaFFE goes on to note that the letter had not been directed to Palpita’s employer, the Ministry of Home Affairs even as of 10:45 this morning. CaFFE adds that due this flaw, Anusha Palpita has been given an appointed as an Additional Secretary and this is a conspiracy of those who are protecting the corrupt.
Executive Director of CaFFE, Keerthi Tennakoon stated that it is an incident which brings disrepute to the Public Administration Service in the history of the country.
Explaining further, he noted that a position is given to an individual when large scale misappropriation takes place from the very same person. He added that the people must urge to reverse such a shameful act.
Convenor of the Collective of Civil Organisations, Saman Ratnapriya stated that the civil society will not condone appointment of Anusha Palpita to an additional secretary position, whereas it should be cancelled and returned to their initial positions.
Explaining further, he added that, secondly, he is a suspect in serious misappropriation of public funds therefore he must be subjected to the establishment code.

Convenor of the First Front, Former Minister Chandrasena Wijesinghe stated that there are questions whether the corrupt are treated. He added that rather than bringing the wrong before the law the law is being implemented on behalf of them by giving them benefits and perks.
The Mawbima newspaper recently reported that Minister Vajira Abeuwardena had informed Advisor to the Prime Minister R. Paskaralingam to issue an order to immediately pay a sum to a businessman who undertook all contracts during the previous administration.
