Met.Dept warns of showers across the Island amongst the aftermath of the extreme weather
The Department of Meteorology says that showers will occur at times in the Western, North-Western, Southern, Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces.
The ministry added that showers or thunder showers may occur at few places in the Uva and Eastern provinces,
The cleanup activities of houses that were affected by the floods due to the swelling of the Kelani River were carried out today by various groups. The Southern bank of the Kelani Rivers was damaged in Malwana.
News 1st visited the Kolonnawa, Wellampitiya on the Colombo – Avissawella Main road and several other areas that were inundated by floods.Following the floods, many have been forced throw away many electrical equipment on to the main road opposite their houses as there is no use of them any more. As there is no proper system to move this waste, the area is over-whelmed with a bad odor.
US Military Personnel and the students of the Sri John Kotelawala Defence University were engaged in a clean-up in the Wellampitiya area.
The roof a house in Angarapola, Welivita in Kaduwela collapsed last night injuring those inside.The parents and the two children who had cleaned their house during the day had gone to sleep at midnight and it was during that time the roof had completely come down. All four suffered minor injuries.
Officers of the National Building Research Organization conducted inspections in the Ginigathhena area on the Kandy- Hatton main roadwhere a landslide warning had been issued.
While the steps were taken to close one lane of the road, The National Building Research Organization notified residents that they should not reside their during the night time.
People who were staying at relief camps following the flash floods that affected many areas have started to return to their homes. However, some are facing a number of issues following their return home.
Although the flood waters have receded, some of the houses are in a huge mess.
Schools that were converted to relief camps will be re-opened to students starting Monday.
