Kolonnawa residents face off against health and sanitation disaster in wake of recent floods
While flood waters have receded, residents of Kolonnawa and surrounding areas are facing what could amount to a health and sanitation disaster.
The Newsfirst team which visited Kotikawaththa and Mulleriyawa today encountered mounds of garbage along the main roads and by roads. Megoda Kolonnawa is one of the areas that was submerged when the Kelani River broke its banks. While the flood waters have receded completely, mounds of garbage reaching as high as the flood waters were deep, can be seen on most roads in the areas.
Residents who only last week were anxiously waiting for boats to save their lives, are waiting today for garbage trucks to take away the waste surrounding them. They charge that the Chairman and Members of the Kotikawaththa-Mulleriyawa Council should be held accountable for this.
Residents fear that if this waste is not cleared out swiftly, they will have to face a dengue epidemic.
