Govt. not aware of extent of gas deposit
Petroleum Minister Susil Premajayantha said the government was not yet aware of the extent of the natural gas deposit found in the Mannar Basin.
Premajayantha told The Sunday Leader that officials from Gazprom in Russia are currently in Sri Lanka and would assess the data available of the natural gas deposits in the Mannar Basin.
He observed that once Gazprom concludes the initial assessment another Russian company would arrive in the country for exploration work.
The government announced that two sites of natural gas deposits have been discovered by India’s Cairn Company while exploring for oil in the Mannar Basin.
He said that when Cairn came upon the natural gas deposit, the Company had not given details about the volumes of the deposits.
“The volumes of the deposits would be known through further studies,” Premajayantha said.
