Lankan plantations complain to Govt. on enchroachment
Sri Lankan plantations companies are complaining that villages and workers have encroached on plantation lands following controversial expropriation lawsl, and are meeting Plantations Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe on Tuesday to discuss the crisis.
“Encroachers are citing this Bill and encroaching on the lands in the low grown tea plantations, because they want to get a head start as they feel that these lands will be given to them anyway,” one official said. He added that on Saturday this issue was raging in some plantations in the Deniyaya area and the police were summoned to resolve it.
“The Minister assisted us in settling Saturday’s issue, but we are meeting him to get a clear direction on the expropriation laws,” the spokesman added. (DEC)
