Tenure of 23 local government bodies to expire
The tenures of 23 local government bodies are due to expire today, Thursday, June 30. However, a decision has not been reached as yet to extend the tenure of the institutions or hand over the administration to commissioners.
Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faizer Musthapha says that a decision in this regard will be reached before midnight.
The tenures of 17 municipal councils, one urban council and five Pradeshiya Sabahas are due to expire today. Among the municipal council whose tenures that end today are the Colombo Municipal Council, the Jayawardenepura Kotte MC as well and the Dehiwala – Mt Lavinia MC.
The tenures of the 23 local government bodies in question ended in October 2015. However, their tenures were extended till December 31.
A second extension was given thereafter. The second tenure extension is due to expire today. Incidentally, the tenures of all 335 local government bodies in the country have now expired .
