58 allegations of fraud against Rajapaksas probed
It is reported that 58 allegations against former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family members are being investigated by the Financial Crimes Investigations Division (FCID) and the Special Police Investigations Unit (SPIU).
At a meeting attended by President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and several ministers to find out the progress over the investigations being carried out by the FCID, CID and SPIU. It was also revealed that FCID was investigating 493 incidents, while CID is probing 15 cases and SPIU 5.
It was also revealed that FCID is struggling to conclude 62 high profile financial corruption cases as foreign financial institutions have not been very helpful in carrying out investigations as they are reluctant to make available details relating to the cases.
It was also revealed that a new Bill will be submitted in Parliament to combine the FCID and the Bribery and Corruption Commission.
