Torch of Hope Rally to light up Kegalle

The Torch of Hope rally, which aims to create public enthusiasm and generate even more support for our Olympians reached Kurunegala on Tuesday.

The torch rally which is an initiative of the Capital Maharaja Organisation Limited and News1st, is being supported by the Ministry of Sports, the National Youth Services Council and the Ministry of Education.

The motorcade carrying the Torch of Hope commenced its journey from Matale on Tuesday after having received blessings at the Sri Mutumari Amman Kovil.

The day’s flagging off ceremony took place under the auspices of the Matale Divisional Secretary P. Maduwanthi and the Assistant Superintendent of Police for the Matale District Gamini Meegaha-kumbura. The Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Association organised a number of hockey players from schools in the area to accompany the torch, along with former javelin champion Prasanna Aluwihare.

Students from schools along the Matale-Dambulla road were seen extending their best wishes to the torch as the motorcade bearing the torch made its way. The Assistant Superintendent of Police for the Dambulla Police Division and the National Youth Services Council Assistant Director for the Matale District L.K. Ratnayake welcomed the Torch of Hope at its first stop of the day at the Dambulla town.

A large number of school students and athletes were seen gathered to welcome the torch. Completing its thirteenth day, the Torch of Hope made its final stop for the day in the Kurunegala town.

The Assistant Superintendent of Police for the Kurunegala Police Division Mahesh Senaratne and the Director of the North Western Province National Youth Services Council T. L. Nandasiri were present to welcome the Torch of Hope. The Torch of Hope will travel from Kurunegala to Avissawella via Kegalle on Wednesday.
