Code of conduct for MPs before regulations for the media: People’s Intellectual Assembly
The People’s Intellectual Assembly says that a code of conduct for MPs must be introduced before establishing institutions that would regulate media institutions and journalists.
“We all agree that there needs to be laws that would affect everybody. They speak of a code of conduct for the media, but where is the code of conduct for parliament? ” said the Joint Secretary of the People’s Intellectual Assembly, Attorney-at-Law Chrishmal Warnasuriya
He added that when the Government of Good Governance was established, they said that a code of conduct for MPs will be introduced, but keeping aside the code of conduct for MPs instead they are attempting to introduce one for the media …”
Leader of the JVP Anura Kumara Dissanayake speaking on the Newsline program today , commented on the matter of regulating the media stating that the current administration in one hand is attempting to intimidate and create laws that would incite fear among the media
He further stated that if the present government brings in regulations to control the media and oppress the media , the JVP will not allow this bill to be passed in Parliament
