Gammedda 100: Damanayaya road completed; clean water provided for Hambegamuwa students
The Secondary School in Hambegamuwa is a place where around 500 students come to learn their A’s and B’s face many hardships, including the lack of clean water.
The children do not have water to quench their thirst and as we at News 1st have calculated, it will only take 3 days to provide these students with clean, drinking water, but… there is a need for a water filter.
We made a kind request on June 11, to all Sri Lankans to join hands with News 1st’s Gammadda 100 Day initiative to give these children water to quench their thirst. Responding to the request was Maliban Milk Products Pvt Ltd…
Today, together with Maliban, the News 1st Gammadda 100-day team was able to commence the project to solve the drinking water issue at the Hambegamuwa Secondary School. We also took steps to clean the well that these students obtain water from.
The students extended a warm welcome to the News 1st team that arrived at the location to commence a project to provide clean drinking water. These children will now be able to consume clean drinking water instead of the brackish water they have been drinking for years.
The area is also prone to chronic kidney disease with parents of a number of children who study at the Secondary School are suffering today because of it.
News 1st took the leadership in providing drinking water to these students through the Gammadda 100 initiative with the support of the Maliban milk “Abayadana” programme
Through the project, a water filtration plant equipped with two large filters will be set up in the Hambegamuwa school. Furthermore, Books were also donated to the library of the school.

In more good news for those around the Hambegamuwa Secondary School, President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to provide a Reverse Osmosis (RO) Plant to be used for the benefit of the area residents.
