UNP and SLFP have decided to function as a consensual govt: President

- newsfirst.lk

Speaking in Polonnaruwa on Saturday, President Maithripala Sirisena said that the United National Party and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party have decided to function as a consensual government for a period of five years .

The president said that the government will undoubtedly work in its maximum capacity to fulfill the aspirations of the people during this time-frame.

The closing ceremony of the months long Nila Mehewara Mobile Service Programme in Polonnarawa was held at Royal College, Polonnaruwa on Saturday.

“I have no intentions whatsoever to get onto the streets once again after my tenure as President”,  said the President

He added that Buddhists are very well aware of the various types of karma you may face based on your merits and sins – and if you get on to the streets and walk under the burning sun after leaving the kings throne, and you need to be carried and put into a vehicle because you can walk no more, ‘we know what kind of sinful karma has fallen upon you’.

“It is because we know all of this as Buddhists that we differentiate on what has to be done for the country”,  he said and further noted that irrespective of how much praise, respect and popularity as well as displeasure and scrutiny is levelled at this government, no one can rattle this government for the next five years.

He went on to charge that this government cannot be changed through political conspiracies and just two weeks ago the United National Party and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party decided to terminate the initial decision of the SLFP to break away from the government in 2017, and work cordially and together as a government for the full five years.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe stated that there is a committment to develop the country, and once it is developed, to engage in multi-party politics but after all of this is done there are attempts to sabotage it as well.

“So this is no surprise. Even King Parakramabahu created a massive kingdom. But after all this, Queen Sugala from Hambantota staged a riot and that riot was completely unsuccessful”,  said the Premier

He added that such things had happened in the past as well,  and it is happening in the present too,  and it cannot be stopped. But what can be done is ‘sticking together’ and taking this journey forward.

Parallel to the event, President Sirisena handed out land deeds to 1000 families.
