Former Governor to spearhead govt’s economic plan despite controversial CBSL tenure
The controversial Central Bank bond issue is being investigated by the Committee on Public Enterprises or COPE. However, Former Governor of the Central Bank Arjuna Mahendran who is said be accountable for this issue, has been appointed to spearhead the governments five year economic plan.
Politicians and civil organisations criticise this action citing that the government has mixed up the law and morals.
JVP MP Sunil Handunnetti charged that the retention of Arjuna Mahendran as a government consultant raises question in regard to the moral of the government. He added that keeping the former CBSL Governor cannot be explained logically and this cannot be proven through COPE in Parliament and that this is seen as an issue that needs to be decided by the people of the country.
Convenor of the Puravasi Balaya Organisation Chandrasena Wijesinghe added that a voice was raised against the corrupt process surrounding Arjuna Mahendran and the bond issue. And it was seen when the rulers stoop very low to cover-up that corruption and at this time they are attempting to place Arjuna Mahendran in another important position in the government while the findings of COPE are yet to be announced.
“There are discussions to give him a position. Who is Arjuna Mahendran accountable to ?” charged the convener of the Puravasi Balaya Organisation
