Michael Phelps wins 19th Olympic goldMichael Phelps won a record 19th Olympic gold medal as the United States clinched the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay title in Rio.

The 31-year-old came to Brazil as the most decorated Olympian in history and has now won 23 medals at five Games.

He swam the second leg for the USA, who won in a time of three minutes 9.92 seconds, with France second in 3:10.53 and Australia third in 3:11.37.

 

China’s first gold of Games won by woman shooter

Coming off a tough qualifying round, the 25-year-old Zhang handily won the final with a score of 199.4 points in 20 shots, well ahead of 19-year-old Vitalina Batsarashkina from Russia, the silver medallist with a score of 197.1.

Anna Korakaki from Greece won the bronze, becoming the first Greek woman to win a medal in shooting.

 

 

Taiwan’s Shu-Ching Hsu wins her first Olympic gold in weightlifting

Hsu Shu-ching claimed a 53kg gold medal for Taiwan at the Rio Games yesterday, consigned arch-rivals China to a humbling defeat and should soon become a double Olympic champion.

Hsu finished second at London 2012 but the winner, Zulfiya Chinshanlo, tested positive in a recent reanalysis of samples and is suspended.

Although Chinshanlo is Chinese she switched nationality to Kazakhstan, the nation with the worst doping record in weightlifting in recent years.

Her title will be taken from her when the legal process is complete and Hsu will be promoted to first place.

Katie Ledecky wins gold in women’s 400 free, breaks her own world record

1470625321209Katie Ledecky of the United States broke her own world record on Sunday on the way to winning the women’s 400 metres freestyle gold medal, the first stage of a rare treble she hopes to complete at the Rio Olympics.

Ledecky, who had come close to the record in the morning heats, led from start to finish to set a new mark of three minutes, 56.46 seconds, shaving 1.91 seconds off the previous best she set in Australia two years ago.

 

Kimiko Raheem Finishes 4th

 

KimikoSri Lankas  Kimiko Raheem entered the arena making her debut Olympic event at 09.30 pm local time on Sunday.

Kimiko was placed 4th in Women’s 100m backstroke heats.

Kimiko’s timing of 1.04.21 was not enough to take her to the all important semi-finals of the event.
