Gammedda100: Clean water for Kahakurullan Pelessa; Community Hall for Degalaara
The villagers of Kahakurullan Pelessa were all smiles on Monday August 15, as the day they waited for with much anticipation, became a reality through the Gammedda 100-day initiative.
The people in this village are plagued by chronic kidney disease due to the inability to access clean drinking water…
“We never thought Sirasa would come forward to help a remote village like ours.”
“This is one of the happiest days for the children of this school and for us as their parents.”
“All these days we have been drinking brackish water. But in another two weeks time we will get clean drinking water.”
These are the words of residents of Kahakurullan Pelessa as they attempted to express their joys and hopes.
Clean drinking water for them as well as their children – this was their request. And News 1st has come forward to full fill their needs. The project will provide water for the Kahakurullan Pelessa Primary School and 850 families in the area.
Construction work on the eighth project of the News 1st Gammedda nationwide initiative commenced in the Thanamalwila Divisional Secretariat area today with the noble aim of providing water to those who suffer without it.
The project was implemented with the assistance of Presidential Task Force on Prevention of Kidney Diseases together with the Sri Lanka Navy.

The project to renovate a Community Hall in Degalaara also commenced on Monday.
“This village is kilometres away from the town. So pregnant mothers and small children have to go to Hambegamuwa for clinical purposes. Due to the absence of a community hall, we could not even conduct a clinic in the area,” said a sesident
“Although you remain in these areas, tolerating these issues, your children won’t. They will move forward. Our hope is also to take the next generation to greater heights,” said Amarasri Bandara, the Project Coordinator – Degalaara Community Hall Project
A number of projects including this are scheduled to be unveiled in the near future, while work on a number of others have commenced.
