Rio 2016 : Sakshi Malik claims India’s first medal
Sakshi Malik has won India’s first medal at this year’s Olympic Games after a storming comeback in the final moments against Kyrgyzstan’s Aisuluu Tynybekova.
But her journey to the Olympic podium has not been easy.
After a gritty performance at the 58kg women’s wrestling category she won bronze, becoming the first Indian female wrestler and the fourth Indian woman to win an Olympic medal.
Malik won the silver medal for India in the women’s freestyle 58 kg category at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, but her triumph in Rio will live long in the memory of those who stayed up late into the night to support her.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday congratulated wrestler Sakshi Malik for getting a bronze medal at the Rio Games.
”Sakshi Malik creates history! Congratulations to her for the Bronze. The entire nation is rejoicing,” Mr. Modi tweeted.
In another tweet, the Prime Minister said: “On this very auspicious day of Raksha Bandhan, Sakshi Malik, a daughter of India, wins a Bronze & makes all of us very proud.”
