Volkswagen will not invest in Sri Lanka

- lankatruth.com

The world famous Volkswagen Company in Germany has given up the investment it was going to invest in Sri Lanka says Deputy Minister of State Enterprise Development Eran Wickramaratne.

During the last general election the UNP, in its campaign, stated that Volkswagen Company, the second largest motor vehicle producer in the world, had promised to put up a motor car assembling factory in Sri Lanka and it would be installed in Kuliyapitiya.

UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe promised youths, on election stages, that one million job opportunities would be created under his government and the first jobs would be given from the Volkswagen factory at Kuliyapitiya.

However, it is reported now that tests have revealed "unexplained inconsistencies" in the carbon dioxide emissions from 800,000 vehicles produced by Volkswagen and the Company has been in a crisis due to complaints and legal action taken by several countries.

Several heads of the Company have resigned due to the emissions scandal and several countries have banned factories belonging to the company. As a result the company has given up the investment it was going to make in Sri Lanka.
