Sri Lanka to host CITES conference in 2019
CITES Pre-COP17 workshop to discuss the proposed sharks and ray listings was held in Colombo. The workshop was attended by 10 countries in the south Asian region to discuss the proposed sharks and ray listings.
Several countries attended the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora South Asia. Countries expressed support for the proposed listings of the silky shark, three species of thresher sharks and Mobula rays.
Minister of Sustainable Development and Wild Life, Gamini Jayawickrama Perera stated that strong action needs to be taken in order to save shark species as 100 million sharks are killed each year.
He added that the government of Sri Lanka joins hands to save sharks found at home – the Indian Ocean and globally. A proposal was also made by him during his visit to Geneva to host the next 2019 CITES conference.
Explaining further, he noted that their proposal was submitted to the cabinet and the President, Prime Minister and cabinet members.
