UN Secretary General to make second visit to Sri Lanka

The UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon is scheduled to make his second visit Sri Lanka on Wednesday, August 31, upon an invitation from the Sri Lankan Government.

Following his arrival,  the Secretary General will meet Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. He is scheduled to President Maithripala Sirisena on September 1.

The schedule of the visiting United Nations Secretary General is as follows:

September  1 – The Secretary General is scheduled visit to Galle, where he will participate in an event under the theme ‘Reconciliation and Coexistence: Role of Youth’.

September 2 – He will travel to Jaffna, where he will meet the Governor of the Northern Province Reginald Cooray, leader of the Opposition R. Sampanthan and members of the TNA. Later on,  he is scheduled to visit a resettlement site.

During the visit, the Secretary General will also meet with several Cabinet Ministers including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mangala Samaraweera,  Speaker Karu Jayasuriya and political party leaders; and civil society representatives.

Incidentally, News 1st is the only Electronic Media organisation in Sri Lanka to interview a Secretary General of the United Nations in its 67-year history.

He previously toured the country in May 2009 – immediately after the Sri Lankan Government militarily defeated the LTTE – ending a conflict which plagued all Sri Lankans for around three decades.
