Rajagiriya Overpass: Construction details and traffic plan
Construction on the first phase of the overpass which will span across the Rajagiriya junction will commence on Wednesday, August 31, says the Road Development Authority.
News 1st Inquiry – The inconvenience caused to the general public
Over 100,000 vehicles pass through the Rajagiriya – Welikada junction which is the intersection for five major arterial roads. The overpass is being constructed with the aim of minimising the traffic congestion that builds up at the junction, and will comprise of four lanes.
Two lanes will initially be constructed under “Phase One”.
The two ends of the flyover are the junction where Buthgamuwa road intersects with the Rajagiriya – Kaduwela road; the other end is the junction near President’s College, Rajagiriya and the Elections Commission.
Total length of the flyover – 533 meters.
Estimated cost – Rs. 4.3 billion
Funded by – The Government of Spain.
Traffic plan during construction
With construction work set to commence tomorrow, police say that motor traffic along the Rajagiriya junction will be limited at times.
*Vehicles approaching from Kottawa – turn off from Thalawathugoda and proceed towards Nugegoda.
*Vehicles arriving from Malabe – turn off from Koswatte and travel towards Mulleriyawa.
Large signs have been erected around the Rajagiriya junction, informing motorists of the diversions in traffic that will be made from tomorrow.
