Gammadda 100: Day 51 -Tech giant gets the world talking while Gammadda gets water for farmers

- newsfirst.lk

Today, Thursday,September 8 marked the beginning of quite a few things, including a certain new high-end mobile phone released by a well known tech giant which got people talking in all excitement.

While the world, including some Sri Lankans were buzzing about the latest toy in town, thinking how they’ are  going to save money to buy the latest piece of tech, we at News 1st marked the beginning of yet another project today through the Gammadda 100 days initiative….

The project is aimed at revitalising the once barren farmlands, giving access to much-needed water so the farmers living around the Gange Yaya village in Embilipitiya can feed their family. The farmers go through one-too-many hardships to secure the water that they receive from the Udawalawa reservoir.

The reason behind their hardships? well, the canal which supplies water for the farmers around Gange Yaya is in a dilapidated state, resulting in the water being leaked out along the way. In other words… wasted.”No one looked into this. For 15 years this canal has remained in this state”, said a villager.

The project will see the renovation of the canal that runs from Udawalawe to Angunukolapelessa.”This leaking water is the courage and the strength of the people of Gange Yaya. Their strength gets washed away into the soil. What we are doing today is providing a new ray of hope to the farmers in Gange Yaya”, said Lakna Amandi, Project Leader – Gange Yaya Canal Project.

“This is not a task that we carry out simply for the people of Gange Yaya. There are benefits of this to the farmer of Angunakola. Since the damage can be reduced the water can be obtained by farmers of Angunukola as well. The Sirasa Network is carrying out a major service through this”, said Thilak Ranasinghe, Chief Engineer – Walawa – Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority

The project is funded by the Sri Lanka Export Credit Insurance Corporation.

Meanwhile, the entry route to the Warala Village, Bibila which was constructed through the Gammadda 100 day initiative will be vested in the public on Friday September 9.
