British journalist Marie Colvin, who was contacted by the LTTE to broker a surrender during the final stages of the war, has been killed in Syria while she was covering the fighting in that country, the BBC reported a short while ago.

Colvin and photographer Remi Ochlik both died in the attack in Syria, the French government said.

Shells hit the house in which the two veteran war correspondents were staying, then they were killed by a rocket as they tried to make their escape, activists told Reuters.

Colvin, known for wearing a black eye patch after she lost an eye due to a shrapnel wound while working in Sri Lanka in 2001.

Colvin had said in 2009 that the LTTE had contacted her and pleaded with her to contact the UN and facilitate a surrender of the LTTE top leaders.

She said that she knew LTTE police Chief B. Nadesan, who had contacted her regarding the surrender, and LTTE peace secretariat head S. Puleedevan since being smuggled into rebel territory eight years before the war ended.
