#Gammadda100: Day 52 – The road to Warala
There are Sri Lankans living in urban areas of the country with the luxury of good tarmac roads as well as tarmac roads which have not been renovated in a couple of years. Either way, most of us urban folk travel in comfortable SUVs/Cars, taking away any chance of feeling the harsh broken road beneath us when we travel through one.
For the people living in developed parts, spending 40 minutes to travel just 1 kilometer is an absurd thought. Unless it’s the rush hour traffic.
However, this is not the case in the rural parts of Sri Lanka, which is a much larger part of the island compared to urban areas.
Day 52/100
THE ROAD TO WARALA
Though there are no “rush hour” times in the rural parts of our island paradise, any person who travel to the Warala village in Bibila, Monaragala has to go through a 1 kilometer stretch of dilapidated road, spending a good 40 minutes to reach the village. Well, at least that was the situation before the Gammadda 100 days initiative decided to step in.
School children, people going to work and the villagers traveled this harsh road which had not seen any renovation for several years, with much difficulties before them.
Identifying the hardships faced by these people, the Gammadda 100 day initiative began renovation work on the road exactly a month ago, on the 9th of August, putting a smile on the people’s face. A smile, which gave us the courage and inspiration to power on, to make a difference, to mark the beginning of a brighter future…..
The construction commenced under the auspices of philanthropist and businessman Ajitha Wijeytunge and the villagers themselves.
One month later, on the 9th of September, the road was declared open…
Ajitha Wijeytunge, the businessman and philanthropist who provided the financial support to renovate this stretch of road is also supporting four other projects undertaken through the Gammadda 100 days initiative.
The road to Warala is the second road constructed and declared open under the Gammadda 100 days imitative, first being the Damanayaya road in Dambulla.
UDAPANGUWA, LUNUGALA
Renovation of another road commenced in Badulla today (9th September). The by road leads to the village of Udapanguwa in Lunugala, Badulla.
“Institutions like Sirasa are part of the national heritage. We must safeguard such things. We must do what we can to protect this. If Sirasa lays their hands on a task, it will be done.” said Businessman & Philanthropist Ajitha Wijeytunge
While the road will be declared open in the near future, a tree planting campaign was also launched parallel to the development project.
“You have brought water to people who had no water, you have given roads to people who had no roads. You are rendering an invaluable service by renovating reservoirs, culverts and waterways. Thereby, from among media networks, the name of Sirasa will be remembered for eternity.”
