Meet the newly crowned Miss America 2017
Miss Arkansas Savvy Shields was named new Miss America.
Despite momentarily stumbling on a pageant question about Hillary Clinton, Savvy Shields, 21, of Fayetteville, Ark., took the national title Sunday night in Atlantic City.
She was chosen out of 52 contestants competing for the title. The outgoing Miss America, Betty Cantrell, pinned the crown on Shields, who wore a simple, classic black gown and took her first walk as queen of Atlantic City for the night at Boardwalk Hall, the traditional home of the 95-year-old pageant.
After her run as Miss America, Shields, 21, will return to the University of Arkansas as a senior studying art. “I want to hopefully work in a museum and teach at a collegiate level,” she said about her plans for the future.
Miss South Carolina Rachel Wyatt was the night’s first runner-up.
