CEB to compensate Pituwala residents
The Ceylon Electricity Board has decided to compensate the residents of Pituwala in Elpitiya for the damage that was caused to their electrical appliances as a result of a high voltage leak.
A group of residents of Ambana north in Pituwala, Elpitiya protested on Thursday. They stated that when the electricity connection to their area was restored after being cut off, their electrical appliances were damaged as a result of a high voltage release.
Electrical Superintendent for the Elpitiya Customer Services Centre, Damith Lakmal, said that the public was informed that a mistake has occurred and it was promised to them that repairs will be done.
Residents state that a similar incident took place last year as well and that compensation was not provided to them.
Electrical Engineer , G.K Athula Kumara pointed out that when it was inspected, there had been damage to electrical appliances in fourteen houses. He said that investigations are being carried out with regard to the mishap that has taken place on the part of the CEB. He also stated the appliances of the residents will be repaired within a month.
“I am thankful to Sirasa for making me aware of this before the news came to me officially”, said the Minister of Power and Renewable Energy, Ranjith Siyambalapitya.
He added that it has instructed that these damages be rectified as soon as possible and that the required compensation payments and the relevant laws have been gazetted. The minister said that after requesting them from the PUCSL it has been put forward to the cabinet for approval, following which it will be produced to the parliament and the law will be established.
” No one should be afraid. When such things happen the CEB will work responsibly”, he said.
