Saudi Arabia expresses ‘great concern’ over 9/11 lawsuits bill

- newsfirst.lk

Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry has expressed that is is a matter of ‘grave concern’ that relatives of 9/11 victims in the US are able to sue the kingdom.

The US Congress voted for the law allowing families of the people killed in the attacks to sue for damages, however this was done by overriding a veto by President Obama who explained that the bill would set a “dangerous precedent”.

15 out 19 hijackers on that day were Saudi nationals but the kingdom denies any involvement in the attack.

“The erosion of sovereign immunity will have a negative impact on all nations, including the United States.” said the the country’s foreign ministry which is similar to the argument of President Obama.

Meanwhile the leaders of the Republican party in Congress have noted that they would reconsider the law while he Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell admitted that the lawmakers were not completely aware of the possible consequences of the legislation

Everybody was aware of who the potential beneficiaries were but nobody really had focused on the downside in terms of our international relationships,'” Mr McConnell said.
